Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, with the school's guiding questions to fill it in and the golden rule: a SWOT that doesn't end in actions is useless.

SWOT is the tool for getting a clear picture of where the business stands and deciding from there. At school we did it after studying the competition, the environment, the location and customer behavior, never before. The core idea is to leverage strengths to seize opportunities, counter threats and fix weaknesses.

VariableSourceGuiding questions
StrengthsInternalWhat do you do better than anyone? Which resources can you access uniquely or more cheaply? What does the market see as your strong point?
WeaknessesInternalWhat can be improved? What should you avoid? What brings your sales down?
OpportunitiesExternalWhat consumer trends do you see? What changes are there in the economy, technology, regulations or lifestyles?
ThreatsExternalWhich trends could work against your current or future plans?

How to read it

From the grid to actions

A well-made SWOT that doesn't turn into decisions is worthless. Once it's done, each box has to answer a question:

  1. How do I exploit each strength?
  2. How do I seize each opportunity?
  3. How do I stop each weakness?
  4. How do I defend against each threat?

SWOT is part of the diagnosis we run at Celestia Management before proposing any change.
