Cómo armar un cóctel en casa: cuántos bocados por persona y cómo combinarlosHow to host a cocktail party at home: how many bites per person and how to combine them

The one-bite rule, how much to plan for each type of gathering, how to balance cold and hot, and what to have ready before the doorbell rings.

Hosting with finger food looks easier than a dinner, and it isn't always: you have to think about quantities, variety and when each thing comes out. But well planned, a cocktail party lets you enjoy your guests instead of spending the night in the kitchen. These are the rules used in event catering.

The bite rule

A cocktail bite is eaten standing up, with one hand, in one or two bites, without knife or fork. If it drips, falls apart or needs cutlery, it isn't a bite: it's a dish. Always picture the guest holding a glass in the other hand.

How many to plan

Type of gatheringBites per person (guideline)
Reception before a dinner4 to 6
2-hour cocktail, no dinner after12 to 15
Cocktail instead of dinner18 to 22, with some heartier bites

These are guidelines: adjust for the time (people eat more at night), your group's appetite and whether there's a cheese or charcuterie board on the side.

How to balance the spread

Ideas that always work

The plan so you're not rushing

  1. The day before: doughs, fillings, sauces, spreads and anything that can wait in the fridge.
  2. That morning: assemble the cold bites, cut vegetables, have breaded items ready for the oil.
  3. An hour before: table set, trays at hand, drinks chilling.
  4. During: bring bites out in rounds, not all at once. Cold first, then hot, sweets at the end.
